When you say "Get a garage in a bigger city and use that one as your main one, regardless of where you started out", do you mean that you can move your HQ? Or do you mean just use that for hiring drivers? I don't think anyone will have any bulletproof strategy suggestions though unless they come from a beta tester, we are effectively pioneering this new game model of building up and organizing a fleet so it might take some time until the best way to progress is discovered.
It's working out for me, the routes are quite varied but still profitable. My strategy is to pick up the highest paying jobs to preferrably whichever cities I haven't yet visited, almost always from the city where my previous job ended so that I don't have to ferry empty to a pickup city.
I went the "be XP effective" route, specced fragile cargo and long distance hauling all the way, level 9 now and I'm doing 12+ 16+ hour jobs for ~30K EUR.
